The Gospel reading:
This parable appears only in the Gospel of Matthew. It tells the
counter-intuitive story of the employer who pays all his workers exactly
the same wage despite beginning in the vineyard at different times during
the day. The fact that it does not correspond with ordinary human
behaviour and normally-perceived justice links this Gospel with the
first reading's claim that God's ways are not our ways. It
is the abundant generosity of God that reverses expectations.
Furthermore, we are expected to match such generosity of spirit by not
being envious of those who gain from the freely-given gifts of God.

"St. Mary's College
extends a warm invitation to an Open Evening for Year 6 pupils and parents
on Thursday, Sept 25th at 7 pm. This is for prospective
parents/carers and children currently in Year 6 (DOB 01/09/97 – 31/08/98)
who will be transferring to Secondary Schools in 2009. The evening will
begin in the Academy Sports Centre, Cranbrook Avenue. Afterwards
there will be a chance to look round the school and to meet the staff
and students. (The recent GCSE and A-Level results were the best ever,
exceeding the other schools in the city. So go along and see what's
on offer!)
Parish Council News: We
had a very full, fruitful meeting on Monday. Among some of the things
discussed was the possibility of a Parish Pantomine some time in January.
Helen Woodmansey, who works at Cottingham High School, is looking
into ideas for scripts and would welcome any suggestions (positive ones
only!). Her telephone number is 845496 (Oh no, it's not! Oh yes, it
is!-just getting you into the mood!) We also discussed the possibility
of a New Year's 'Do' here in the church following on from our
celebration for the Millennium. Again, we'd be glad to have suggestions.
We hope to have our Parish Dinner on Friday, May 15th at
The Endsleigh Centre (new menu!). We would also like to form a Liturgy
Group, which would look at how we celebrate Advent and Easter and the
other great events in the Church's calendar, maybe involving music,
drama, readings etc. What have you to offer? I'm open to all suggestions!
Finally, we're always looking for 'new blood' on the Parish Council.
We meet about four times a year and look at what we can do as a parish,
both for ourselves and for others outside. It's not too onerous but
hugely important. Do give some serious thought to joining us (four evenings
a year?). Our next meeting will be on Monday December 8th
and in the new year we will be changing the meeting evening to a Tuesday.
Afternoon Tea Party:
Anne and Geoff Land are hosting this today, Sunday, from 2.30
to 4.30 at their home, 7 Endyke Lane, to raise funds to purchase benches
for the St Michael Tansi Church, a chapel-of-ease to Star of the Sea,
Freetown. You can still come along this afternoon even if you
haven't put your name on the list. Dermot, who's away,
has given me his Hull City ticket, but I'm giving it to Jim
Norton (am I sad or what?) Also, Chelsea are playing Manchester
Utd on TV that afternoon. My reward in heaven is going to
have to be immense for giving up all this!
Parish/Inter-Church Quiz Night:
Fri, Oct 3rd 7.30 for 8 pm. We hope to welcome teams from
the various Churches in the village. It's always a fun evening (with
a bit of cheating to add spice!) Bring your own drinks; nibbles will
be provided.
John Franks RIP: John
produced the DVD of Fr. Tony's funeral; Hull University Students'
Union has decided to dedicate the new external staircase to his memory;
there will be a small memorial plaque-unveiling ceremony this Friday
at 4 pm followed by a light buffet and drinks in Sanctuary.
John's sons, James and Dom, would like to invite any of his friends
from the parish to come along.
Parishioners in the News:
Linda Gillard will be celebrating her *th birthday this coming
Friday. Dominic Priest is celebrating his 90th
birthday next Saturday! Congratulations to Halina
and Steve on the birth of their first child, Stephanie
Rachel, three weeks ago. And good luck to Sarah whose baby is
due this weekend! Catherine Leach ,who plays in the music
group, had wonderful results in her A-Levels: English Lang. – A, Music
Tech. – A, Art – B and she goes to Leicester University next weekend
to read English. "Shipping expert kicks off trade centre
talks" – and who could this be? Our very own Dominic Ward.
Nice picture of you, Dom, in last Monday's Mail!
Calling all University Students!
Chaplaincy Programme and Cathsoc Events: there are green cards in the
porch with all the details you'll need for the first semester. There
is Mass at the Chaplaincy every Sunday at 12 noon and 6.30 pm. (But
you don't have to go there!) There are lots of social events also,
and Fr Jim the chaplain is a great guy! (You can tell him I said that!).
Sierra Leone News:
Fr Joe left us on Wednesday to spend a final few days with his
family in London, prior to returning to Sierra Leone this Wednesday.
As you saw, he certainly enjoyed his time with us and is already looking
forward to another visit in the not too distant future! Other
news: I had a phone-call from Fr Ambrose on Thursday to
say that he is being moved from Star of the Sea Parish. He's going
to Conakry in Guinea as chaplain to the English speaking community there!
We're still planning a return visit to Freetown next October. Would
you fancy being part of the group? Last year we took along two
6th Formers. It would be good to do the same again.
Gwen Percival passed on another cheque for £pound;42.16 which will
be put into the building project in Freetown. This is from her regular
book sales here at church. Thank you for supporting her.
Chris Brown RIP: Chris
returned to the Lord three weeks ago, exactly six weeks after being
received into the community here at Holy Cross. "Fr Pat, I'm
going to get to the Gates of Heaven without my passport stamped.
Can we do something about it?" :that was ten weeks ago. Both his
Reception and Requiem Mass last weekend were wonderfully moving.
It was great to see so many parishioners present giving their support
to Evelyn, his sons Chris and Simon, his
grandsons Daniel and Alexander and his sister Janet
who had flown in from Oregon. Chris had asked for any donations
to be given to the School Building Project at Star of the Sea, to help
finish the work. We were £pound;600 short but at the funeral we raised nearly
£pound;950. Chris would be so proud! May he rest in peace. Amen.
Catholic Women's League
News: Elizabeth's lunch for Branch Funds held in
the Garden Room in August was attended by 54 people and raised £pound;722.
The Macmillan 'World's Biggest Coffee Morning' will be in the
Garden Room this coming Friday after morning Mass (which is at Holy
Name). The next Cake Stall will be the weekend of October 11th
and 12th, in aid of the Children's Hospice, Zoe's Place,
in Middlesbrough.
Church Music Group: We
meet every Friday evening in the church at 7 pm to practise new hymns
and to prepare for the following week's Mass. Joe Rawcliffe
co-ordinates this activity and everyone is most welcome. What we are
looking for are enthusiasts not necessarily experts but if you play
an instrument you'd be more than welcome. Sadly we say goodbye
to Catherine Leach this weekend as she heads
off to university. She has been a very important part of the group for
many years. Who's going to take her place? At St Vincent's
Church this Sunday afternoon at 2.30 pm there will be an organ
recital given by Geoffrey Coffin (what a name!). All are welcome
and admission is free.
Prayers for the Sick: Please remember especially Matthew, aged 18, the nephew of Anne Marie Harrison (cyclist) who had an operation in Liverpool recently to remove a brain tumour and who is quite unwell. His grandparents sometimes come here to Holy Cross. Aggie Hainsworth is back home again after a spell in hospital. Her husband Dick is still in respite care. Keep in your prayers also Collette O'Brien's dad, Fred, still struggling. Pray also for Mary Megson's niece,
Elizabeth, recovering after a cancer operation, for Georgina Chapple, Ivy Behan, Pat Bickerstaffe, Ursula Stainton, Edie Sharpe, Betty Swallow, Paddy and Mary Falvey, Roy Wardill, Lilian Fowlston, Betty Eagan, Denis Gilson, Fred Higginson, Maureen, Mamie Highland, Bill Murphy, Father Michael O'Connor and Father Tony Bickerstaffe."
No jokes, sorry – no room!
