The Gospel Reading: In this passage, Jesus meets people at their place of work. Spotting first the fishermen and then their boats, he uses both to further his message. The boat becomes a pulpit, a place from which the word is proclaimed. The congregation is drawn from those who are close at hand, or are willing to journey to hear the word. The same word is spoken to, and for, all. It is a reminder to us that God's word is not restricted to church or cathedral. The lake-shore and boat of this passage could as easily be the canteen or assembly line of a factory, the fields or sheds of a farm, a classroom, the boardroom of a corporation – in short, any place where we too proclaim by our lives the word of God.

"Mankind", the celebrated medieval mystery play, will take place at the Donald Roy Theatre, Gulbenkian Centre, the University of Hull, from February 10th to 13th at 7.30 pm and 3 pm on the Saturday. This classic play, a battle for humanity's soul, is rarely staged and will be an ideal launching pad for Lenten discussion. "Feasts this past week: On Monday we had the feast of St Bridget, one of the patrons of Ireland. Amongst the miracles attributed to her were the changing of her bath water into beer to satisfy the thirst of unexpected clerical visitors (my bath water looks like the colour of beer at all times!) and her cows gave milk three times the same day to enable some bishops to have enough to drink! (Obviously they didn't fancy the beer!). Wednesday was the feast of St. Blaise with the traditional Blessing of the Throats. I had a bad throat that day and asked Peter Fowlston to do the honours for me; he almost harpooned me in the attempt and I was nearly worse off than before! This coming Thursday is the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes.

Book of Remembrance: If you wish to have your relatives' anniversaries recorded in the parish book, please take one of the forms in the porch, fill it in and return it. We are indebted to Shirley for keeping the book up to date.

RIP Betty Egan: Betty, (Elizabeth Winifred) aged 82, died on January 29th at her home at South Field Court. Mike, her brother, was with her, thank God. They had been very close all their lives. Betty will be received into church this evening (Sunday) at 6 pm and her Requiem will be on Monday at 11 am. She will be buried in Eppleworth Cemetery.

(There will be no 9am Mass on Monday and church cleaning will be postponed until Monday, February 15th.)

Mary Brown (née Murphy) aged 91, Monica Williamson's mother from Ferryhill, died last Saturday at 7 pm while we were praying for her at Mass. She is being brought home on this Sunday at 3 pm; the CWL are coming at 4 pm to say the Rosary and her Requiem is on Monday at 10 am at All Saints, Ferryhill. Monica has a sister Patricia and a brother Ian.

Father Joe O'Brien was buried from Sacred Heart Church on Friday. He was a native of Hull, born in Chapman Street in 1922 and a parishioner of St Mary's, Wilton Street. A late vocation, he was ordained in 1975 and his two appointments were at St Gabriel's in Middlesbrough, where he preceded me and as Parish Priest of Thirsk from 1983 until 1998 when he retired. One of seven children, only his sister Betty survives him and she is very ill at this time.

Danny Revill aged 25, from St Anthony's Parish, died on Friday. Our thoughts are with his parents Mary and Paul who have looked after him all his life. Danny was born severely disabled but attended most of Hull City's home games, cheering and shouting from the West Stand. He will be missed by many. May he rest in peace. Amen.

Finally, Mike and Barbara's friend Elena lost her grandson, Dennis, aged 19 in Argentina. He had an accident while swimming and died on January 30th in the ambulance with his parents with him. May he rest in peace. Amen.

Lourdes Mass and Rally: Bishop Terry will be joining us this afternoon at the Marist Church for this special Mass at 2 pm, followed by the Rally in the Parish Hall. Many of the present and past pilgrims will be there and everyone is welcome to come along.

Gerald Baker gives his thanks for the gifts you left for the Raffle and Tombola.

Bishop 'unrepentant': (One of the Tridentine ones the Pope is trying to bring back into the church): The British bishop soon to face trial in Germany on charges of denying the Holocaust is apparently unrepentant, allegedly telling colleagues recently that it was a "huge lie" that six million Jews were murdered by the Nazis. Richard Williamson, 68, also allegedly told members of his ultra-conservative Roman Catholic brotherhood, the Society of St Pius X, that "a new world order" had been built on the "fact" that Jews were systematically gassed in concentration camps, according to a report in the German news magazine Der Spiegel. Bishop Williamson is due to stand trial on April 16th over remarks he made to Swedish television in January last year.

"Love in Truth." The social teaching of the Catholic Church: contemporary challenges, choices and implications. Bishop Terry extends an invitation to the whole diocese – young people and adults alike – to join together in a special project for Lent. It is entitled "Love in Truth" – the English translation of the 2009 Papal Encyclical "Caritas in Veritate", which explores human development in the light of justice and the common good. The aim is to promote insight and understanding of recent Catholic Social Teaching by applying it to numerous contemporary issues. This is particularly pertinent with an imminent General Election. The project consists of two local sessions, then a third plenary session in York (with John Battle MP as keynote speaker) for the whole Diocese together. The two Hull sessions will be Tues, February 23rd and Tues, March 2nd at the Endsleigh Centre from 7 – 9 pm.

Victory for Pope after equality laws protest: The Government has backed down over a clause in the Equality Bill that was described as an "unjust" restriction on religious freedom by the Pope. Ministers had tried to include a new definition of a priest in the anti-discrimination law but the Roman Catholic Church said it was too narrow and said it could face prosecution unless it allowed homosexuals to become priests. No 10 is anxious that relations with the Vatican remain cordial and has indicated that it will drop the contentious parts of the Bill. A source there said: "We are clear that these parts of the Equality Bill should not go forward. The Pope's intervention has been noted."

Please pray for the sick in the parish and the house-bound: Pat O'Reilly, Kath Carter (Hallgarth), Lynn Cleary, Jack Ormiston, Margaret Bird, John McSherrie, Brian Mizon, Norah Ledger, Winnie Day, Kath Scaife, Margaret Crummay, Mary Waller, Maureen Burman, Gerry Breen and all others who are unwell.

CWL News: Our next meeting will be our AGM, tomorrow Monday, in the Garden Room, preceded by Mass at 6.45 pm. The parish SVP Conference is going to join us in the celebration of the Eucharist. Our first Cake Stall of 2010 will be on the weekend of February 27/28 in aid of the Hull Lourdes Sick Fund.

The next Film Night at the Methodist Church will be on Friday, February 26th, when we will be showing "The Pursuit of Happiness". Admission is free with refreshments at half-time! We are looking at the sing-a-long version of The Sound of Music for the future. Now that should be fun!

Lenten Day of Reflection: an opportunity for peace and time-out with guided reflection on "The Jesus we meet in Lent" (Say but the Word). It will be an encouragement and healing for living out our faith in daily life and will be led by Caroline Dollard from the 'Celebrating Family Life' Diocesan programme. It will take place at St Joseph's, Boothferry Road on Saturday, February 20th from 10 am to 2.30 pm. Please bring a sandwich; hot drinks will be provided."
