January 31st 2010 Fourth Sunday of Ordinary Time

Thought for the Day: "In the hospital waiting-room I ponder the news with mounting despair. I can't stop climate change or nuclear bombs blowing up the world or get food faster to the homeless in Haiti. My presence there wouldn't help anybody. I can only say: give and pray, probably in that order. With relief, I discuss with a passing nurse a piece of the news I do know something about: nurses will get three-year degrees, not two-year diplomas – a step up we agree they deserve, for medical technology gets more complex by the day.

But there's a problem here too: I've found the kindness of the nurses as essential as technology but how do you teach kindness on a degree course? For vulnerable oldies, and youngsters too, hospitals become a way of life – and kindness is the difference between heaven and hell. A nurse welcomed me into a ward: "Well, me poor darlin', let's sort you out. Yer a brave lad." I thank her profusely and she remarks: "Well, it can't be me beauty; it must be me charm" and pirouettes away with my washing. I slept like a babe that night. I watched a nurse pop a teddy bear into a youngster's bed as a nice surprise after treatment and I actually laughed.

In my experience, you learn kindness by the kindness and unkindness you've encountered and how both felt, also the kindness you've shown and the unkindness you've inflicted on others. I also find you can catch kindness from people like measles, not just from books. Prayer helps too. Also people who don't like themselves don't like others either. So treat yourself for the good you've done and like yourself, even if nobody notices your goodness. God does." (From Rabbi Lionel Blue)

"Rest in Peace: Long time parishioner Betty Egan aged 82 died peacefully at home in the early hours of Friday morning. Betty had never been married and it was lovely that her brother Mike was able to be with her at the end. Betty hasn't been well these past few years and had spent some time in Castle Hill Hospital. She's now with her brother Terry and sisters Mary and Margaret in heaven. Our thoughts are with all her nieces and their families who have been so good to her over the years. Mike also wanted to say a word of thanks to Elizabeth Rodgers who brought Holy Communion to Betty faithfully every week and also Barbara Marshall who was a regular visitor. Many other parishioners also popped in now and then. Eternal rest grant to her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace. Amen.

Congratulations to last week's 'new arrivals:' Oliver Ruan, son to Chris and Bianca Mooney, Thomas Adil, son to Andrew and Narmina Mooney and Sidney Florence, daughter to Ben and Emma Harper-Longbone. A busy Sunday afternoon but thoroughly enjoyable! The only dark cloud was Everton's defeat in the Cup the previous day! But heck! I wasn't grieving!

Present Aid: Christian Aid's Gift Arm and I got a lovely card from Louise Rizk's daughters saying: "Your special gift is a football for the Kick HIV tournament in Sierra Leone. Every year, our partner Bo Youth Centre organises special football tournaments called Kick HIV, which teach young people how to protect themselves from HIV. During the action on the pitch, trained youngsters mingle with other young people in the crowd to educate them. So football could help save lives." Very apt considering our links with and visit to Bo a couple of years ago.

Birthday Girl: Shirley Easto celebrated hers last Thursday and she isn't bothered if we mention it! Good on you, Shirley! And it was also Diana Ormiston's on Thursday!

Nearly Lent? It begins on Ash Wednesday, February 17th just two weeks and a bit away! On the first Saturday of Lent, February 20th, there will be a Lenten Day of Reflection at St Joseph's on Boothferry Road from 10.00 – 2.30. It is an opportunity for peace and time-out with guided reflection on "The Jesus we meet in Lent – Say but the word." It is an encouragement and healing for living out our faith in daily life and will be led by Caroline Dollard from the Diocese's 'Celebrating Family Project'. Please bring a sandwich and hot drinks will be provided.

National Marriage Week: February 8-14th. Any ideas of how we could mark the week? Maybe on Sunday. February 14th Valentine's Day, for couples to renew their marriage vows (and on the Saturday also)?

Middlesbrough Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes, May 28th - June 4th. By air from Durham Tees Valley Airport. There are some brochures and booking forms in the porch if you're interested with details of prices and hotels.

Hull Youth Pilgrimage to Lourdes: We go at the same time as the diocese and help with the sick, pushing them to the various services, chatting to them and generally helping out where and when necessary. We take pupils from Years 8, 9 and 10. There is a quite a small group from Holy Cross this year and room for a few more. Happiness guaranteed! And the parish will pay half the cost! So, parents, want to get rid of your little darling for a week over the half-term? There's the opportunity! Have a word with me.

Congratulations to Sister Lynda Dearlove, a Mercy Sister who worked in Hull, an MBE in the New Year's honours list. She is director of women@thewell in the Westminster diocese to support prostitutes and victims of trafficking.

"I used to be a Catholic but…" We've all heard it! Or the variation, "I used to go to Church but…" Well maybe this is for them! "Open Door" – a series of meetings for returning Catholics at St Charles's Centre (upper room) beginning Monday, February 8th from 7.30 to 9 pm The programme consists of seven weekly meetings held in a confidential and accepting atmosphere. Here you can find supportive friends. You can share some of your experiences (if you wish). You can catch up on what has been happening in the Catholic Church and you can renew your knowledge of the Church's teaching. For more details contact Frances on 07992 698922 or Sister Brenda or Sister Kathleen on 211731. Or take one of the cards and pass it on.

The New Translation of the Mass: New words for old: The Confiteor – '…I have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault.' Eucharistic Prayer II – 'Make holy, therefore, these gifts, we pray, by sending down your Spirit upon them like the dewfall, so that they may become for us the Body and Blood of our Lord, Jesus Christ.' Agnus Dei – 'Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.'

Some other examples: 'consubstantial with the Father', 'oblation of our service', 'precious chalice'. The Bishops in South Africa misread the directives from Rome and introduced the new translations of the Order of Mass over a year ago. The translations were met almost uniformly with opposition bordering on outrage and have created serious division in the parishes. If you would like to add your voice to the more than 10,000 who have already voiced their concern, you can log on to www.whatifwejustsaidwait.org

Prayers for the sick: Margaret Bird, Nora McGeown, Jack Ormiston, John McSherrie and Eric Booth (CHH), Leo Murphy, Stephen Spencer(Angela Pullen's father-in-law), Margaret Crummay, Brian Mizon and Barry Hempstock (CHH), Kathleen Scaife, Winnie Day, Norah Ledger (who fell recently & broke her hip), Molly McNicholas, Anita Marshall, Lilian Fowlston, Tony Tordoff and his mother,

"The Word for Today": The edition for February, March and April is now available in the porch, and it's FREE! Great to keep on the bedside table for a prayer or thought last thing at night or first thing in the morning.

Bishop Terry met the Pope on Friday: The Diocesan Bishops of England and Wales were in Rome during the week when they met the Pope for their five-yearly 'ad limina' visit. They have each written detailed reports of no fewer than 70 pages, which were sent off in June. During their week-long visit, each Bishop will have a private audience with the Pope, as well as with various Vatican congregations and councils. (I wonder if Terry will mention our chalices, sign of peace and prayers of the faithful?)"

Jo Rawcliffe did the Great North Run last year in aid of Dentaid. Could the last few remaining sponsors who have not yet paid please give her their pledged sponsor money or put it in an envelope through the house door, marked "Jo's Sponsor Money"?

Lourdes Rally - last chance to give something for the Tombola, Raffle and Cake stalls! The Rally is next Sunday, Feb 7th at 2 pm; Mass at the Marist Church and afterwards in the Church Hall. There is a box in the church porch here for your donations.

Haiti CAFOD Relief Collection The grand total for the two weekends' collections amounted to £1,285.10, of which £575 was gift-aided. The word 'grand' is used advisedly! Many thanks for your generosity and thanks to Teresa for organising it all.

Finally, some football quotations: David Beckham: "My parents have always been there for me, ever since I was about 7."

Mark Viduka: "I would not be bothered if we lost every game, as long as we won the league." Neville Southall: "If you don't believe you can win, there is no point in getting out of bed at the end of the day." Paul Gascoigne: "I've had 14 bookings this season, 8 of which were my fault, but 7 of which were disputable."
