January 10th 2010 Feast of the Baptism of Our Lord

With this Feast, Christmas ends liturgically, though it continues in spirit and as a liturgical cycle until Candlemas, when we recall Mary's Post-birth Purification and Our Lord's Presentation in the Temple. On this, the Octave of the Epiphany, we continue to focus on the mysteries that entered our hearts on the Epiphany, but today more specifically concerning the Baptism of Jesus by St John the Baptist in the river Jordan. He whose birth we have recently celebrated now shows us how to be born again.

We welcome Father Paul Dowling, from St Charles's, who is saying the Saturday evening Mass for us and Father Gerald Burns SM, who is saying our Sunday morning Mass.

Please note: Service of the Word and Holy Communion from Monday to Saturday at 9 am, except Tuesday at 7 pm.

RIP Please pray for the repose of the souls of Father Pat's uncle Micky who died on Christmas Eve, aged 87, and his aunt Rosaline, who died last Sunday, the 3rd, aged 90. They are the brother and sister of Father Pat's mother, who is still not well. The two funerals will take place in London and Leamington on the 15th and 19th, both taken by Father Pat, whom we should see back at Holy Cross towards the end of that week (weather permitting!).

Please also pray for the repose of the soul of Peter Brewster, Teresa Ulyatt's brother-in-law, who died on Wednesday.

Eternal rest give to them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. Amen

The year ahead: 2010 "It may be weeks or even months before Rome makes a formal announcement, but it is practically certain that Pope Benedict will visit England and Scotland this autumn.

The Pope's trip will be the highlight of what promises to be a significant year for Britain's Catholics. While in England, he will beatify Cardinal John Henry Newman – now on track to become the first non-martyr English saint since the Reformation. In a few week's time the bishops of England and Wales, closely followed by those of Scotland, will be going to Rome to brief Pope Benedict about the state of Catholicism in Britain.

It is an important year for Catholicism internationally too, with the likelihood of a huge ceremony in St Peter's Square to beatify the now Venerable John Paul II. There will also be a Vatican-based Synod on the Middle East, a crop of new cardinals, and the Turin Shroud will go on public display for the first time in a decade.

The Pope's visit to Britain will be the last of four foreign journeys he will make this year, all of them in Europe. He is expected to arrive in England on 16 September and travel to Scotland on 19 September before returning to Rome. The trip will, according to the Government, have "the status of a state visit". As such, it would normally involve meeting the Queen, although for now Buckingham Palace is staying silent on the matter.

Most of the talking so far has been done by the Secretary of State for Scotland, Jim Murphy, a Catholic, who told The Tablet in December 2009 that the visit is "a unique constitutional arrangement" as the Pope is head of a faith as well as a head of state. Mr Murphy explained that Pope Benedict would eschew the normal trappings of a state visit including "banquets and gold carriages."

The centrepiece of the Pope's visit will be the beatification of Cardinal Newman and it looks as though this will take place at Coventry Airport.

At some point in the year, probably in the autumn, Pope Benedict is planning to canonise Mary MacKillop

(1842 – 1909), making her Australia's first saint. But the ceremony is likely to be overshadowed by the expected record-breakingly fast beatification of the late Pope John Paul II (1920 – 2005). Pope Benedict only recently declared his immediate predecessor 'Venerable' and now only needs proof that a miracle has been worked through the intercession of the Polish pontiff before he can beatify him." (from The Tablet)

Hull & East Riding Newman Circle Details of their three Spring meetings are on a (green) poster in the porch.

The Garden Room May I remind parish-group users that both the main room and the kitchen should be left tidy and clean after their use, in preparation for the next user. This means that tables and chairs should be stacked and the floor should be hoovered if, for example, there are biscuit crumbs on it. (We now have a new, efficient upright vacuum cleaner, which is kept in the kitchen.) A group which had paid for a booking this week had to stack tables and chairs and hoover the floor before they could begin their activity. I had no alternative but to waive their booking fee – a loss to parish funds and potentially the loss of a good customer. Thank you for your co-operation. (John McNicholas)

Catholic Women's League All are welcome to their meeting in the Garden Room at 7.30 pm this Monday, the 11th, when Ray Parker will be giving a talk about Oberammergau.

From Gwen Percival: "The Book Sale results for December were £55.28 and the total for the year was £788.92, an increase of 65% on last year. The next sale will be after Mass on Jan 17th- unless we get snowed in again!"

Fossil foot-prints of the first 'fish' to walk on land have recently been found on the Holy Cross mountains in Poland!!

From Diane in Cameroon: "Happy Christmas and a Happy New Year to all at Holy Cross. Thank you for always thinking of the children. You give me the courage to carry on and I shall always be grateful. I can't find the words to thank you enough. The Lord is great and wonderful. Love from Diane."

We shall be cleaning the church on Monday, Jan 11th from 10 am. If you are able to give an hour to share the load, we would be very grateful. Please contact Gwen on 845459.

The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children The Society's national campaign this year is to keep abortion advertising off TV and radio. After each Mass this weekend, please take and send a post card in support of their campaign. The Society wishes to publicise the fact that little-known European Regulations, passed in Parliament in 2008, ban TV advertising of "prescription" drugs and procedures – which abortion certainly is.

Please pray for Father Pat, for his mother, for Leo Murphy and for all in the parish who are not well or are having problems getting about in the present icy conditions.

Finally, a fairy story: Once upon a time, in a land far away, a beautiful, independent, self-assured princess happened upon a frog, as she sat contemplating ecological issues on the shores of an unpolluted pond in a verdant meadow near her castle. The frog hopped into the princess's lap and said: "Elegant lady, I was once a handsome prince until an evil witch cast a spell on me. One kiss from you, however, and I will turn back into the dapper young Prince that I am, and then, my darling, we can marry and set up house in yonder castle with my mother, where you can prepare my meals, wash my clothes, bear my children and forever feel grateful and happy doing so."

That night, on a meal of lightly sautéed frogs' legs, seasoned in a white wine and onion cream sauce, she chuckled to herself and thought: "I don't think so!".
