Pentecost Sunday
The Spirit came with dramatic power on Pentecost Day, but in our lives he comes quietly and gently. Because of the gentleness, perhaps we do not fully appreciate his presence in our lives. Because we may be too used to thinking of his gifts only in the lives of great Christian heroes and heroines, in saints, martyrs and other great figures, we do not fully appreciate and realise the gifts of the Spirit in our own lives. We may not use the gifts in dramatic ways but they are there for us in the ordinary events of our lives: when we stand by our principles even when the pressure is on us;
when we cope with life’s difficulties;
when we find that we can help, encourage and support each other;
when God matters more than other things;
and when we grow in our understanding of God and the Church’s teaching.

Remind you of anyone? “He was a popular preacher, often preaching for three or four hours (!!) and often several sermons on the same day. When he started his career, his voice was weak, but with constant exercise and practice it became extraordinarily resonant. The style of his sermons was lively and emotional. Like the Friars of the later Middle Ages, he made full use of a wide repertory of anecdotes, mimicry, acting, clowning and denunciation. He moved his audiences to both laughter and tears.” No, not Father Pat but St Bernardine of Siena, a Franciscan friar (1380 – 1444).
Build a Cairn for Peace in the Holy Land As part of the effort to "Pray for Peace in the Holy Land", Sister Catherine invites you to join her to build a Cairn for Peace in the grounds of the Endsleigh Centre at 3 pm on Friday, June 5th. Come along and Bring a stone!
(From Jan) “Diabetes Coffee Morning Thanks to all who attended, assisted, baked, donated, ate, drank, chatted etc. We raised £175 for Diabetes Research and another £30 for the Vocational Centre in Freetown. I would like to thank my friends for their help and especially my two daughters, Jacqui and Helen. Not many young women in their 20s would spend their evenings baking and Saturday morning helping at a coffee morning – and they volunteered. Thanks to Gwendoline for the book stall, to Father Pat for the room and for ordering everyone in after Mass on Saturday morning. You can all have a big pat on the back.”
Please pray for Des McKeown, in hospital in Oldham, and for all in the parish who are unwell.

“Manna Coffee Morning”: Diana would like to thank everyone who came along last Tuesday and also Chris Clarke for showing the film of their recent trip to China. They raised £47.60, which will help the redecorating of Manna.
Rest in Peace: Betty Swallow’s funeral service will be at Haltemprice Crematorium at noon on Monday. The Requiem Mass for Mary Lawes, who died in Overton House during the week, will be here at 2 pm on that day.
Celebration of Priesthood: Bishop Terry will be celebrating a Mass especially for those who will be having a ‘special’ anniversary this year. It will be at the Cathedral in Middlesbrough on Friday, June 12th at 7 pm. That actually is the date of my own 32nd Anniversary. The celebration is open to all parishioners who might like to attend.
“The Global Day of Prayer”: Today, Sunday at Beverley Minster, from 4.30 – 8.30 pm. ‘Taste and See Prayer Zones’ from 4.30 – 6 pm when the Minster will be divided into a number of different prayer zones, drawn from a number of traditions, both contemporary and ancient. From 6.30 – 8.30pm there will be a Pentecost Celebration, a rich variety of fervent prayer and passionate worship. Join people in over 200 countries uniting to pray and celebrate the coming of the Spirit. Experience the unity and extent of the church around the world. Cream Teas will be available from 4.30 pm while stocks last!
Last Sunday’s Question: “What’s the difference between a woman and a lady?” Claire Little gave this answer in the Garden Room afterwards – ‘Two halves of lager’.
Christian Aid: The house to house collection in Cottingham raised nearly £3,000 and the tin in the church porch last weekend raised £41.04. Many thanks from Iris Pennie from St Mary’s Church, the co-ordinator for Christian Aid.
Father White’s Golden Jubilee: On Tuesday June 16th at 7pm there will be a celebration Mass at St Vincent’s when Bishop Terry will preside. There will be refreshments afterwards in the school. I go back a long way with Michael! I was a Deacon at Sacred Heart in Middlesbrough in 1977 when he was the curate there. He moved south to Hull soon afterwards (nothing to do with me I assure you!). In his fifty years as a priest, Michael has served in only two parishes! Some record! I was ordained in 1977 and by 1978 I was already in my second parish!
The Sacrament of Confirmation: Bishop Terry will be in Hull on Wednesday June 17th at 7pm to administer the sacrament at St Francis’s Church on Wembley Park Ave. Four adults at Holy Cross are preparing for this big occasion.
Congratulations: Bernie (Cornelia’s daughter) and her husband Ken will both be celebrating their 50th Birthdays this coming Saturday and also their 25th Wedding Anniversary! Well done, both of you! See you at the party!
Holy Cross Parish Council: Our next meeting will be on Monday June 8th in the house at 7.45pm. We’re always looking for new members and you are welcome to come along and see what we do, without any obligation!
A Story with a Moral: A turkey was chatting with a bull. “I would love to be able to get to the top of that tree” sighed the turkey “but I haven’t got the energy.” “Well, why don’t you nibble on some of my droppings?” replied the bull, “they’re packed with nutrients.” The turkey pecked at a lump of dung and found it actually gave him enough strength to reach the lowest branch of the tree. The next day, after eating more dung, he reached the second branch. Finally, after a fourth night, the turkey was proudly perched at the top of the tree. He was promptly spotted by a farmer who shot him out of the tree. MORAL of the story: Bull **** might get you to the top, but it won’t keep you there!
Parish Prayer Circle: Begun in 2000 and now revised in 2009. Any prayer requests you might have can be passed to either Diana on 846555 or to Tony and Shirley on 842285 who will then pass them on to the rest of the ‘Prayer Team’ which numbers around thirty people. If you’d like to join the ‘Team’ have a word with Diana, Tony or Shirley.
“HMS Pinafore” and “Trial by Jury” will be presented by our friends, Hull Savoyards at the Middleton Hall, Hull University on Wed, Thurs and Friday, June 17-19 at 7.30 pm. Tickets are £8.50 Adults and £6.50 Concessions at the door. On Thurs, Nov 12th they will be presenting an “Evening of Gilbert and Sullivan” here at Holy Cross.
Christening next Sunday: After Mass we will be welcoming into the family of God, baby Alafair, second daughter to Elizabeth and Simon Dunn (Sandra and John’s daughter) and sister to Phoebe. Congratulations from all of us here!.
Birthday Boy! And it’s the turn of Phil Leech as he celebrates his *th. Birthday this coming Thursday.

Finally Father John and Sister Mary were playing golf at St Andrews. On the fourth hole, Father John swings, misses the ball and shouts “Damn, I missed!” Sister Mary says “You shouldn’t curse. God will get you.” It happens again on the fifth hole; he misses, swears again and she tells him off. When they get to the 18th hole, he misses again, shouts “Damn, I missed.“ She says “You shouldn’t curse. God …… “ and a bolt of lightning comes out of the cloudless sky and kills her in mid-sentence, followed by a booming voice from the heavens: “Damn, I missed.”
