Fifth Sunday of Easter
The First Reading: After Jesus, Paul is the central figure of the New Testament The Acts, written by Luke, consists of 28 chapters, of which 17 are dedicated to St Paul. This passage recounts Paul's experience when he turned up in Jerusalem three years after his conversion on the road to Damascus. Paul was accepted into the Christian community and began preaching in Jerusalem. However, he upset the Greek-speaking Jews and, for his own safety, was removed to his home town of Tarsus. It would be fourteen years before Paul would return again to Jerusalem.
The Second Reading: The Greeks had four words to describe different aspects of love. Love is the great theme of St John's gospel and mostly he chose to use the word 'agape' to describe the love of Christ that was to be the hallmark of Christ's followers. This theme is carried into his first letter. Love is the sign that we have passed out of the darkness of sin and death and into the light of Christ. In the giving of his life for us, Jesus has left us the supreme example of agape-love. His followers are asked to live lives of 'agape' (self-forgetfulness) in the world.

CAFOD Pilgrimage to Holy Island – Saturday June 13th Hexham and Newcastle Diocese have again invited our diocese to join them on their annual Pilgrimage to Holy Island. If there is sufficient interest, a coach will be booked, leaving St Anthony's Church at 6 am to arrive in time to walk across the causeway at 11 am. Mass will be celebrated by Fr Peter Keeling at 2 pm and the coach will leave at 5 pm. Anyone not wishing to walk may stay on the coach to cross the causeway. The cost will be approximately £26. Please contact Sheila Swift (348272) as soon as possible.
A request for refugee families Thanks for the generous response to the recent request for boys' clothing 8 – 10 years; the family concerned is delighted. Warm thanks also for recent donations for new baby boys. There is also a need for boys' clothing 5 – 6 years of age (summer and winter); also for a baby girl due in early June. Please mark any donations 'For Tessa' and/or ring her on 849966.
Gwen's book sales total for April was £60.22; many thanks to her.
"The CWL meeting on Monday next will start with a Eucharistic Service beginning at 7.15 pm for the World Union of Catholic Women's Organisation. It will be followed by an open meeting." from Rosaria.

"First Communion Children: Ben,Tom, Charlotte,Lucy and Robin. The 'Big Day' is Sunday, June 21st and, as part of their preparation, this Sunday morning's Mass will involve them in the theme of 'Thanks for Creation and New Life'.
"Unfriendly Vicars": Vicars are not welcoming enough in church, a 'mystery worshipper' has claimed. Rev. George Fisher, Lichfield diocese, who went undercover, said: "I have been seriously ignored in most of the churches I have visited."
Lourdes Youth Pilgrimage: We have thirty-five youngsters from St Mary's College travelling to Lourdes on Thursday, May 21st, some from Holy Cross. Our final meeting with them and their parents will be this Monday evening in the Main Hall at St Mary's College at 7 pm. It's important that you all be there, when we sort out travel times, contact numbers etc. It should only last an hour or so.
Hull Lourdes Sick Fund Pre-Pilgrimage Mass: Sacred Heart Church, Southcoates Lane: this Sunday, May 10th at 2 pm.
The Hull Irish Association meets this coming Friday at the Endsleigh Centre at 7.30pm. Fr David Grant will speak about the history of the local area. He is a well known local historian and tells a good story. If you have any Irish connections (and most have!) or are just interested in the topic, you are most welcome to come. Have a word with me.
Mass of Thanksgiving for all New Catholics and their Sponsors: Fr Michael Keogh writes: 'Just a reminder that this mass of Thanksgiving for the New Catholics received at Easter, and also those received in previous years, will take place in the Cathedral at 3 pm on Saturday May 30th. Bishop Terry will be the main celebrant. After the Mass, which fulfils the Sunday obligation, there will be light refreshments in the parish hall. Anyone else is most welcome too.
CWL News: We are having a Cake Stall at both Masses this weekend in aid of CAFOD. Rosaria held an Italian Meal in the Garden Room on Friday and, as always, it was a great success! We have the Market Stall on Thursday, June 25th and are looking for items for sale. We are grateful to Jean Kemp who is able to store the stall items in her garage. There will also be a "Quiet Day" (Retreat) in the Garden Room on Saturday May 30th, to which all the ladies of the parish are invited. It starts with coffee at 10.30 am and the plan is to have a shared lunch with contributions from participants.
Manna Coffee Shop "Decoration Day": This Sunday and next Sunday from about noon onwards. Many of you use Manna and also work there as volunteers. It's getting a bit "dowdy" and needs a Spring Clean.. So, we're looking for able-bodied 'volunteers' who can wield a paint brush or wash down the walls etc, even just for an hour or so. I can't manage it this Sunday, as we have a Lourdes Mass at Sacred Heart at 2 pm but I will be there next Sunday after the Baptism at 12.15. Steve Crossley, the Pastor from Christ Church (whose parishioners are the main sponsors of Manna) was my first visitor in Hull Royal, so I (and we) owe it to him!
Birthdays: Not only did Ann Abel tell me after Mass on Saturday it was her birthday, but she had even brought along a piece of her cake all wrapped up in foil! And it was a 'Big One' (the birthday, not the cake). She's not here this weekend; she's over in Kerry but we'll catch her next weekend! Congratulations also to Sharon from Leicester, a regular visitor, who last weekend celebrated her *th birthday.
A 'Happy to Accept Prayer' for the Old: "Most dear Lord, now that I am old I think: when you've lived a long time and experienced so much, people will respect you and come to you for help and guidance, but sometimes there are people who think you're a real fuddy-duddy and that they must be careful with you in case you talk too much or fall over. It's really comical and often true and so good for us when it happens. Help me to laugh and accept and get on with the joy of living for You."
More Bob Dylan: Peter and Wendy, who were married here last Saturday, had this reading: 'Forever Young' a song by Dylan. "May God bless and keep you always; may your wishes all come true; may you always do for others and let others do for you. May you build a ladder to the stars and climb on every rung; may you stay.... forever young. May you grow up to be righteous; may you grow up to be true. May you always know the truth and see the lights surrounding you. May you always be courageous, stand upright and be strong, may you stay.... forever young. May your hands be always busy; may your feet always be swift. May you have a strong foundation when the wind of changes shift. May your heart be always joyful; may your song always be sung. May you stay... forever young."
Please pray for Maisie Cosgrove, Graham Leech, John Green, Ally Appleyard, Charles Jenkinson, Betty Swallow, Lilian Fowlston, Roy Wadell, Steve Crossley, Barbara's sister-in-law, Sallie's grandson, Gerald Moxon, Doris Thurston, Andrea Gardham and Betty Eagan who are sick and for all others in the parish who are not well or are house-bound.

Finally, to make up for some recent joke-less newsletters:
Why Men are happier than Women
Men get extra credit for the slightest act of thoughtfulness. Men's underwear is £3.95 for a three-pack.
Three pairs of shoes are more than enough. Men are unable to see wrinkles in their clothes.
The same hairstyle lasts for years, even decades. Men only have to shave their face and neck.
Men can play with toys all their lives. One wallet and one pair of shoes – one colour for all seasons.
Men can wear shorts no matter what their legs look like. Men can do their nails with a penknife.
Men have freedom of choice about growing a moustache. Men can do Christmas shopping for 25 relatives on December 25th in 25 minutes.
Thanks to all contributors. Items for next weekend to Father Pat, please
