Today’s Gospel: Jesus continues the education and formation of his disciples and once more it is a lesson that they find hard to take on board and one that Christians down through the centuries have similarly found hard to put into practice. Division among believers in Jesus Christ makes little or no sense, yet since the very beginning we have been a fractured group. Today’s Readings: The great boxer Muhammad Ali was never, in his heyday, afraid to tell everyone who would listen that he was the greatest. He had the confidence to make his claim because he knew that very few could touch him in the boxing ring. Self-belief, even arrogance, is a notable feature in many tops sports men and women. Without confidence even the most talented of footballers, golfers and boxers fail to achieve their potential. Muhammad Ali’s supreme confidence in his own ability brought him to the very pinnacle of his sport. The ego and self-assurance that is necessary for success in sport and in many other worldly pursuits seems to have little to offer in terms of being a follower of Jesus. The gentleness and endurance of the good man aggravate the godless in the reading from the Book of Wisdom.
